I’m dedicating this weeks’ column to two giants. No, not Eli and OBJ. Two Hall of Famers retired yesterday. Vin Scully and Dick Enberg. Both of whom were guys I have been lucky enough to listen to for a very long time (yeah I’m old, so when I say a long time, it really is a long time). San Diego has been a big part of my life, so hearing Vin and Dick was just a part of everyday life, dare I say, normal. It’s times like these when you realize how awesome certain parts of your life really were. While you’re in it, while you’re in your day in, day out mundane “habits” of your life you don’t normally take the time to savor those special moments like you should.
So in a very ‘un’ grumpy old man way, I’m trying to tell you to make sure you take the opportunity to lift your head up, put down your cell phone, don’t take a selfie, be your own selfie. Truly experience what’s going on around you. Take in and acknowledge all the special things going on because they won’t always be there, and neither will you. To pay tribute to Vin and Dick, I’m going to use a special selection of their quotes to headline each topic. Hope you enjoy it!
“Statistics are much like a drunk uses a lamppost; for support, not illumination” - Vin Scully
The Lions have Fantasy Football’s number three QB and the number one WR statistically, oh yeah, and only 1 win. Nice loss to that juggernaut called the Bears. I’m sure all those statistics will be warm and cuddly by the fire while you’re watching the playoffs…..yet again.
And while we’re on statistics, we can’t leave out one other ‘top’ player, Philip Rivers for the Chargers, just another example of why championships are won with TEAMS not players. It’s truly painful to watch a guy like Rivers waste away before our eyes, great guy, great teammate. On the surface, you think he’ll end up being this generations Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, or Kenny Anderson, but those don’t fit. Why? Because they all at least played in the championship game, they just didn’t win. There’s only one good example that fits and it’s gonna hurt…..wait for it….Dan Fouts. That sound you heard were other Charger fans collective hearts breaking and flashbacks to 27 below temperatures on a January day and what could have been.
“Losing feels worse than winning feels good” - Vin Scully
No one knows this better than the Cleveland Browns, well at least the losing side of this, but I thought the Bills dropping a 16 zip lose on the Patriots in Foxboro took a toll on Bill Belichick, or should I say it took a toll on his Microsoft Surface. Ummm Bill, you realize you’ve gone 3 and 1 without Brady right? But look on the bright side Pats fans, it’s Monday and Tommy is back! Fresh from the beach, the sun, and a month long vaca. Somehow I think he’ll miss the warm, loving arms of Gisele when he experiences the ‘hugs’ Carlos Dunlap, Cameron Heyward, Cliff Avril, and Muhammad Wilkerson have waiting for him. And I’m sure Ndamukong Suh will be happy to give him a new meaning for ‘cupping’.
“Good is not good when better is expected” - Vin Scully
Have you noticed that the weather has a better home record than the Buccaneers? I mean they’ve played 2 home games and had both delayed for hours by lightning and severe storms. Everyone expected Jameis Winston to have a breakthrough year. So far Thor has a perfect record. The Bucs wish they could say the same.
“Andre Dawson has a bruised knee and is listed as day-to-day. Aren’t we all? - Vin Scully
JJ Watt, Cam Newton, Luke Joeckel, Dez Bryant, Thomas Davis, Carson Palmer, Navorro Bowman, Trevor Siemian, Gerald McCoy, Kevin White, Chris Johnson, Antonio Cromartie, Eric Ebron, Devin Funchess. No, this isn’t the Pro Bowl list, it’s the injury report….from this week. It use to be knocked out teeth, broken noses, or torn up knees. Now it’s concussions and soft tissue issues (you’re welcome Sal).
“OOOhhhhh my” - Dick Enberg
What’s harder to get your head around, the Rams being 3-1 or the Cardinals at 1-3? This was suppose to be the year that Fitzgerald, Palmer, and company put it all together after being so close the past couple of years. You know, let two quality guys like Carson and Larry drift off into the sunset as champions. Right now the only thing drifting off is Carson’s conscientious. And the Rams? The rest of the league knows they have Case Keenum chucking the rock to a cast of wide receivers that wouldn’t be on anyone else’s practice squad right? I’m not a Rams hater, but you should probably enjoy the good record while you can; Patriots, Falcons, Seahawks, Niners, Cardinals, that’s what you have to look forward to your last 5 games this year.
And was I watching an arena league game or was that the Falcons Panthers game? 503 yards passing and 4 TD’s for Matt Ryan? Seriously? I can only hope all of you that have Matty Ice on your fantasy team actually started him.
“To be honest, I’ve never been interested in how many games I’ve done and seen. It doesn’t mean anything to anybody. All I know is I’m eternally grateful for having been allowed to work so many games.” - Vin Scully
Vin, it’s us that are eternally grateful for having the pleasure of listening.
